Guest Blogger - Emma Lai

Hi everyone! So I've kidnapped Emma Lai and made her guest blog here! lol just playing but today's guest is Emma Lai! Welcome to When Doves Cry, Emma!

Sweet Romance

Sometimes I feel as if the market demands sex with romance.

Take Regencies. When I started reading them, they were sweet courtship stories. A young miss sees a handsome lord, soldier or even plain mister across the crowded ballroom floor or the park and she’s in love. But the most popular line of Regencies has disappeared. Yes, you can still find Georgette Heyer, but most “Regencies” now have sex.

I’m not against sex. Far from it, but I don’t have to write it into every story. My first published story, His Ship, Her Fantasy is sweet. The characters just didn’t go there. It wasn’t important to building their relationship. The third story in the series is also sweet. And though it hasn’t been contracted yet, I don’t see myself adding sex just to sell it.

Blurb:
Ellie Woods is in love…with a ship. When an argument with the ship results in a bump on the head, she finds herself in the strong arms of Alastair. But, who is he, and where did he come from?

Alastair has loved Ellie from afar for years, but duty has kept him from revealing himself to her. When a grave threat reveals his true identity, he hopes that Ellie will choose reality over fantasy.

So, what about you? Do you sometimes crave sweet? Does it remind you of your younger self when seeing a boy smile your way made your heart jump?

Thanks for hosting, Kadian! I could stand to be kidnapped for a day...as long as I was held hostage at a day spa. :)

Great Interview! I agree, Emma. Sometimes I am so close to my characters that I can't bring myself to intrude on their privacy in the bedroom. I 'close the door' when things get intimate. I also wonder if a book will sell with less sex.

Emma, I'm glad to find books without sex.
While I enjoy erotica, I also enjoy just romance. I will check out your website and books.

Onmiownnow2,when I pick up a book, I don't flip through to determine if there are sex scenes. When I finish a book, if the story was good then I never miss the lack of sex. So, to me, it's all about finding a publisher who doesn't think sex is necessary for sales.

Thanks, Andrea! There's a time and place for all things. I can write sex, I'm just saying I don't unless the characters call for it.

Well that's just it. I was just told that one of my book sucked because of the love at first sight story...my parents were a love at first sight but I think they were just pissed that there wasn't any needless sex scenes...the characters didnt ask for them so I didnt put them in lol

That sucks, Kadian. :( There's nothing wrong with love at first sight!

HI Emma and Kadian!

I love the title of this blog. :) I'm such a Prince fan! *ahem* Awesome post, Emma! I know exactly what you mean. I've read Regencies for going on decades now and have seen how steadily the sex is getting hotter. I kind of miss the good ole days. Maybe that's just because I don't really care for writing such scenes. lol I giggle too much!

Oh, girl! I had so many crushes growing up. Usually I gave them nicknames. I can still remember how I would get all giddy every time I would see the guy I lusted for in college. Now, him, my roommates named 'Sand Box Boy'. I guess they were trying to tell me love really is blind! LOL

Miss you, lady!! ((hugs!))

Hi Emma! Yes, I do like to read sweet stories. Erotica can be fun but honestly, the sex scenes sometimes all sound the same. I admire writers who can make any romance scene a little different than the rest (tough to do, I know! lol). But that's why I like to write at all "heat" levels too.
I loved His Ship, Her Fantasy! Looking forward to what you have up your sleeve next. :)

Hi Sarah! thanks for stopping by. Yah, I was listening to the Prince song the day I rebrand this blog--it was a beautiful line and I was feeling kind of melancholy-ie lol.
